In聽their聽effort to enhance the administrative聽functions聽of聽the聽Nigerian聽universities,聽registrars across聽the universities聽in the country as well as聽other critical stakeholders have gathered with a shared mission to elevate governance standards within their esteemed institutions.
The registrars met under the umbrella body of the Association of Registrars of the Nigerian Universities (ARNU), which stands as a beacon of collaboration and excellence, bringing together聽registrars from聽the federal,聽states, and聽private聽universities across Nigeria.
The聽annual business meeting serves聽to聽foster professional development and address the evolving challenges of university governance in the 21st聽Century.
The聽Second Registrar鈥檚聽Workshop and聽the聽75th聽Business聽Meeting聽jointly organised in collaboration between ARNU and the 水果派 of Nigeria (NOUN), were聽held at the聽headquarters聽of NOUN in聽Abuja,聽with聽the theme:聽鈥淪ustainable Legal Framework as Panacea for Industrial Harmony in聽the Nigerian Universities System: Challenges and Remedies.鈥
In his address,聽the聽Executive聽Secretary,聽Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Arc. Sonny Echono,聽said the critical role the registrars play in聽Nigerian聽institutions cannot be overemphasised.
鈥淩egistrars are the first and last contact of students from the admission to graduation, as well聽as聽play a supervisory role and monitor how their graduates are fairing,鈥 he said.
Echono聽stated that聽registrars聽are聽the聽repository records for both the administration and academic progress of the university聽and聽reaffirmed that part of聽the TETFund鈥檚聽intervention in ICT this year will be connecting all study centres of NOUN to ICT fibre infrastructure.
On his part,聽Ag. Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Chris J. Maiyaki,聽commended the Vice-Chancellor of NOUN for accepting to host the laudable event which provided a platform for invaluable discussions and insight.
Maiyaki, represented by the director, executive secretary鈥檚 office, John Mairafi Ahmadu,聽said the theme聽was very apt as it resonates deeply with the current needs of聽the聽academic institutions.
鈥淚n a rapidly changing landscape, characterised by complex legal issues, the imperative for industrial harmony is key. In this regard, the roles of聽registrars as gatekeepers in shaping effective and sustainable governance structures cannot be overstated.
鈥淏y engaging in thoughtful dialogue and sharing best practices, ARNU will continue to play a pivotal role in advancing the professional competencies of聽registrars as well as enhancing university administrative management practices.
鈥淭he National Universities Commission would continue to collaborate with you, as part of the efforts towards repositioning the Nigerian University System, for enhanced global competitiveness, as we navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities that lie ahead,鈥 he said.
Also speaking,聽NOUN聽Vice-Chancellor, Prof.聽Olufemi Peters, who聽was also the Chief Host,聽encouraged the participants to make use of the opportunity provided by聽the university聽to add knowledge.
The聽Vice-Chancellor, represented by the聽Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof.聽Isaac Butswat,聽said聽registrars are very important in every institution, in training, recruitment and others.
Mentioning their roles, he said, comes with the聽issuance of appointment letters, issuance of promotion letters, dismissal letters, admission letters, suspension letters and so on and so forth.鈥淵ou should therefore put the fear of God in whatever you do.鈥

Earlier,聽the registrar of the聽university, Mr. Oladipo A. Ajayi, in his welcome address,聽said the theme聽鈥渦nderscored聽a fundamental aspect of university administration – the need for a robust legal framework that ensures industrial harmony within聽our聽聽institutions.
“The event is not merely a convergence of minds; it is a celebration of our collective commitment to excellence and innovation in higher education.
鈥淲ith over One Hundred (100) Registrars from universities across Nigeria gracing this event, it is indeed a testament to the significance and relevance of our association in shaping the academic landscape of our nation.鈥
According to Ajayi, NOUN, being the first Open and Distance Learning (ODL) single mode institution in Nigeria, stands as a beacon of progress and inclusivity in education.
鈥淲e do not simply embrace technology; we harness its transformative power to transcend barriers and create opportunities for all. Our commitment to quality education remains unwavering, as we adhere to the same rigorous standards set forth by regulators for traditional universities,鈥 he said.
Ajayi also聽appreciated the VC for the unwavering moral and financial support extended to make the聽event possible.
ARNU聽chairman, Mr. Ife Oluwole in his welcome address,聽stated that the workshop would聽help聽registrars of universities hone their skills and be abreast with the current trends in university administration globally.
鈥淚 appeal to proprietors of our universities and other agencies of government to show better commitment to the training of聽registrars and other personnel. The efforts of TETFund聽in this regard is highly commendable.
