The duo聽of聽Registrar,聽Mr. Oladipo A. Ajayi,聽and the聽Director,聽Physical Development,聽Works and Services (DPDW&S),聽Arch. Sadiq Shuaib聽have聽held a progress meeting聽with the study centre聽director 聽as well as聽heads of unit at the Lagos聽Campus, Lagos聽State.

The meeting聽centred聽on how to chat the university forward administratively聽by聽improving聽the聽students enrolment, staff development, amongst others.

Speaking on the challenges of low enrolment, the registrar stated that the dwindling nature of students鈥 enrolment,聽both the prospective and current students,聽calls for聽a聽serious concern.

鈥淔rom聽the updates, the total number of enrolment聽is聽just聽13,015聽that had enrolled in the institution compared with the last semester matriculation,聽which was over聽20,000.聽The number is not encouraging as the institution is losing her prospective students,鈥澛燗jayi聽lamented.

He聽encouraged the centre directors to engage their staff members in regular staff meetings as some of the desk officers, especially the junior and new staff may not fully understand the importance of the ODL policy.

鈥淪tudents should be seen as clients, and need to be addressed properly and treated well as they serve as the institution’s ambassadors,鈥漷he registrar聽said.

Ajayi聽commended the efforts of the directors and senior officers for their great efforts on challenges encountered especially during examinations.

He, however,聽frowned聽at聽the habit of exploitation聽of聽students,聽saying that聽some聽member of聽staff collide with business centres to exploit the students which may discourage聽them聽from further registration.

The registrar聽said the directors should monitor their staff and discipline anyone that is being caught.

He reminisced on the issue of staff training,聽saying聽that “there is a need for training, the staff of the study centres have聽complained that they are not benefiting from training.鈥

Ajayi further implored the directors to聽make use of the聽Annual Performance Assessment (APA)聽form聽in聽analysing and giving recommendations on training聽to聽such staff, as it聽will improve work performance.

The university,聽he聽added,聽is working on certain issues and has been decided that faculty desk offers and the聽deans聽should be having meetings at least twice a year for their facilities.

On his part, the DPDW&S聽director聽addressed the issue of the environment, and of the business centre that encircle聽the premises,聽saying聽that many study centres operating business centres have issues with examination misconduct, while some staff聽are聽using the business centres聽to extort money from the students.

According to Shuaib,聽the management has decided to take drastic steps and decisive actions to prevent all issues that are on the ground聽and聽urged directors to speak with the business operators to find way out as contractors will soon commence work.

At the end of the meeting,聽the聽directors gave their reactions on the challenges encountered especially parking space during the examination,聽which causes obstructions and suggested that the centres聽should be decentralised聽to limit聽most聽of the聽issues聽discussed.
