The聽Vice-Chancellor, National聽Open聽University of Nigeria聽(NOUN), Prof. Olufemi Peters,聽has said the university has聽grown to聽become聽a聽leading university in digital delivery as well as聽Open and聽Distance聽Learning in Nigeria and聽West Africa.

He stated this at the聽university鈥檚聽20th聽Anniversary聽Celebration, which kicked off with a聽Round-Table聽Discussion聽alongside three previous Vice-Chancellors of the university and other invited guests on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at the university鈥檚 headquarters in Abuja.

The discussion, which x-rayed the journey of the only ODL university in West Africa since its resuscitation in 2003, had the theme聽鈥淣OUN聽in聽Nigeria聽Higher聽Education聽System:聽Impact,聽Achievements,聽and聽Next-steps,鈥澛燼nd was moderated by聽Francis Egbokhare, Professor of Linguistics, Department of Linguistics and African Studies, University of Ibadan.

Peters鈥 three predecessors, Emeritus Prof. Olugbemiro Jegede, Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe and Prof. Abdalla Uba Adamu each took turns to lay bare their respective stewardships, the ups and downs and the sterling qualities that put the university in a class of its own.

In聽his聽welcome聽address,聽the host and current Vice-Chancellor聽thanked聽the聽ex helmsmen and particularly noted them聽for聽being聽excellent聽change-makers聽that聽paved聽the聽way聽for聽him.

Peters said聽each聽one聽of聽them聽contributed聽to聽getting聽NOUN聽to聽where聽it聽is聽right聽now,聽citing the ending of聽missing聽results聽menace,聽admission聽difficulty聽and聽improving聽the聽digital聽space聽of聽the聽university.

Speaking, Prof.聽Jegede聽stated聽that聽NOUN聽has聽shown聽that what聽was聽impossible聽in聽1983聽is聽indeed聽possible.聽鈥淚t聽showed聽that聽ODL聽was聽achievable聽and brought聽education聽to聽the聽doorstep聽of聽everybody.鈥

He聽advised聽that聽for聽NOUN聽to聽expand,聽revolutionary聽programmes聽hinged聽on聽community development聽and聽street-relevant聽programmes聽need聽to聽be聽implemented.

“This聽will聽improve聽the聽finances聽of聽the聽university聽and聽will聽lead聽to聽more聽staff聽development聽and聽聽increase聽staff聽welfare,”聽the one time VC said.

On his part,聽Prof.聽Tenebe聽re-echoed his predecessor鈥檚 statement, emphasising on the need to聽introduce聽more programmes that would aid staff development and welfare, urging them, however, to聽work hand-in-hand with the university and be diligent in their duties so that it would be a mutually beneficial endeavour.

He聽praised the university for being consistent in providing access to quality education to many Nigerians who would have otherwise been left behind and also contributing to the development of the country by providing skilled personnel in various fields.

Tenebe聽stressed that it was important for everyone involved to work together to ensure that NOUN continues to provide quality education to Nigerians and contribute to the development of the country.

The聽immediate-past Vice-Chancellor,聽Prof. Adamu, disclosed how聽NOUN has had a significant impact on the educational landscape as one of the few universities in Nigeria to use the ODL model and as one of the first institutions in Nigeria to use technology in its operations by offering online courses and examinations, which proved聽helpful during the advent of 聽Covid-19.

Adamu聽praised the university for introducing a range of digital tools and resources to support students, such as online libraries, interactive tutorials, and virtual classrooms.

He added that those who would have otherwise submitted multiple applications to traditional universities聽now聽have聽hope,聽thanks to NOUN’s year-long admission,聽which was very important in a country where there are significant barriers to accessing higher education.

The聽Director,聽Regional Training & Research Institute for Distance and Open Learning聽(RETRIDOL),聽Prof.聽Christine Ofulue spoke on where NOUN is, what the university has done and聽its聽plans for the future.

A聽Professor of Science Education,聽University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN),聽Prof. Uchenna Nzewi spoke on the perception of the Nigerian university system on the 水果派 of Nigeria,聽while聽Prof.聽Uduma Oji Uduma,聽the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), NOUN,聽in his vote of聽thanks, appreciated everyone for coming, stressing that聽the university has聽not even reached its full potentials聽as聽a number of聽projects and plans聽are in the offing for its聽growth.
