Prof. Inegbedion addressing desk officers

The Director,聽Directorate of聽Quality Assurance, Prof. Juliet Inegbedion,聽has called on the聽various Desk Officers at the directorate聽to strive towards ensuring that the quality of service offered by the university is top notch.

She said the directorate focuses on compliance and, therefore, is聽looking for ways to improve on the university鈥檚 activities.

The Inegbedion made this call at the maiden regular meeting of the Directorate of Quality Assurance with the newly-installed Quality Assurance Desk Officers from the faculties, directorates and units, which was held on Monday, July 17, 2023, at the university headquarters, Abuja.

According to聽her,聽鈥渨e have a product that we are marketing and selling,聽which is quality in open and distance learning and our target market is the prospective and existing students. The only way to measure the quality of what we are providing is through our products which are our graduates.鈥

She noted that fitness for purpose and fitness of purpose are keywords to look at when considering quality, therefore,聽everything done in NOUN must be in accordance with the mission and vision of the university.

Looking at the university vision,聽Inegbedion said, 鈥渢here are two basic areas that we聽are聽concerned with, which are access and quality.聽While with the mission of the university, we are focused on functional, cost-effective and long-life learning.

鈥淭herefore,聽as quality assurance officers, our driving force is our mission and vision, and we must work towards achieving them.鈥

Speaking on the duties of the officers, she said their specific roles include communicating the university quality policies, processes and procedures聽to all staff in the faculties, directorates, units and study centres.

Desk officers should be working with their directors, heads of units and deans to develop and present the standard operating procedures to the quality assurance directorate for approval, monitoring,聽compliance of SOPs in their various units, directorates and faculties and identifying gaps and challenges limiting improvement in SOPs, she said.

Kuje certificates presentation

There was a palpable celebration at the Kuje Custodian Centre, Abuja when some of the inmates who bagged various university degrees from the 水果派 of Nigeria (NOUN) were presented with the certificates.

In an event organised at the Kuje Correctional Service, where the graduates鈥 families, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and other relevant authorities were in attendance, the university presented their certificates from the Convocation Ceremony of March, 2023.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, represented by the National Coordinator for Special Study Centres, Mrs. Adesina Modupe, said the inmates鈥櫬燼chievement is a testimony of their commitment and determination聽to add value to their lives, and to prepare themselves to contribute to society upon their release, despite their incarceration.

鈥淚 would like to admonish our grandaunts today, that the sky truly is not your limit; rather you are the only ones who can place limits on yourselves; know that there is no telling how far you can go in life and the best that you can have,鈥 Modupe said.

She urged聽other聽inmates to take advantage of the 100% scholarship given to them by the university to run any programme of their choice in partnership聽between the university and聽聽the Nigeria聽Correctional Service.

The coordinator聽also stated that the university聽had taken聽the聽decision聽because it has appreciated聽the聽abundance of wealth, greatness and prospects and the beautiful future the聽inmates聽have in the nation, their families and themselves and deemed it fit to provide this opportunity to help ensure that they take full advantage of it.

On his part, the Controller General of Correction, Nigeria Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, represented by the Controller of Corrections in charge of FCT Command, Ibrahim N. 聽Idris, stated that education is transformative and powerful rehabilitative tool for development in society.

Nababa added聽that with the certificate they have received they can compete anywhere without being stigmatised.

He聽appreciated the聽university for聽its聽unwavering聽support to the correctional service all over the federation in ensuring that inmates are being reformed through education, saying that聽since inception of the programme, over 200 inmates have enrolled in Kuje聽centre alone.

The controller聽enjoined other inmates of the facility to also take advantage of the free education and other vocational skills to get themselves equipped for success in the larger society upon their release.

The聽centre聽director Controller of Corrections, Francis Enobore (Rtd), called on the public to desist from stigmatising ex-offenders, as they have been corrected and should be accepted back into the society with all rights and privileges to avoid re-offending.

The Deputy Controller of Corrections in charge of Kuje Custodian Centre, Christopher Peter Jen, while urging the inmates to take advantage of the 19 different vocational/skills acquisition training programmes that are ongoing in the facility to better their lot, cited that white collar jobs are limited, but with skills they can be independent entrepreneurs as they combine education with skills.

On their parts,聽the graduates, who spoke through聽Dabu Christian Picado,聽expressed their profound gratitude to the聽Correctional Services, and the 水果派 of Nigeria聽for helping them rediscover themselves and putting them in the right path through the education scheme.

They聽assured the authorities of their will聽to聽never put the efforts to waste, but will remain agents of change in the society.

Participants at the end of the conference

Security and election management experts have advised authorities in the country to work towards stemming the perennial election crises and proffered workable solutions toward addressing the phenomenon before the next general election in 2027.

At the maiden National Peace-building Conference 2023, organised by the Institute for Crisis Resolution, Peace-building and Conciliation (ICRPC), a retired army general and a former Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), urged the president as well as other political actors in the country to invite, encourage and accept open political processes, which are central to democracy and governance.

This is just as the conference, which took place at the headquarters of the 水果派 of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja, presented the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Dr. Rabi鈥檜 Musa Kwankwaso, alongside 11 others the Peace Ambassador awards.

While presenting his speech as the Guest Speaker at the event, organised in collaboration with NOUN, retired Major General Lawrence Onoja, recalled how Boko Haram insurgency in the north-east posed serious security challenge to the 2015 general election in the country.

Onoja said the 2023 general election had equally witnessed similar challenges, as the socio-political environment in the country ahead of the election was characterised by mistrust and agitations in certain quarters.

The civil war veteran emphasised on the freedom of choice as a central aspect towards the realisation of citizens鈥 constitutional rights, which, according to him, can only be made possible when relevant state institutions are made to function effectively.

He urged the judiciary to dispense and resolve issues surrounding the 2023 polls, even as the retired general enjoined president Bola Ahmed Tinubu 鈥渢o sustain the good works he has started and also introduce palliatives to cushion the hardship in the country.鈥

Another Guest Speaker, and former REC, Benue State, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda gave a detailed explanation about conducting elections in Benue state and the attendant crises, citing how he managed to curb the 2015 general election challenges in the 2023 polls.

Yilwatda, however, called on relevant authorities to take drastic measures of deepening technology utilisation, establishment of election offense commission as well as the development and institutionalisation of legally-backed Alternative Dispute Resolution in an effort to ensure safer conduct of the subsequent polls across states of the country.

Kwankwaso received the award through his running mate in the 2023 general election, Rev. Idahosa, while other awardees that include the NOUN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, the DVC, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, Dr. Iroye Samuel Opayemi, Maj. General Onoja (rtd), Prof. Andrew Zamani and six others were conferred with the Peace Ambassador award.

水果派 Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, represented by the Head of Department, Dr. Iroye Samuel Opayemi presented the Lead Paper, as goodwill messages from the Vice-Chancellors of the Federal University, Lokoja and Veritas University, Abuja, were offered.

The Chairman, Central Planning Committee of the conference, Dr. Emmanuel Jah, on his part, expressed appreciation to NOUN for the university鈥檚 collaboration to hold the conference, while the Registrar-General of ICRPC, Dr. Abdulwaheed Odewale, in his vote of thanks, said the conference was a success as diverse voices that transcend any barriers converged to dissect and proffer solutions to the security issues of the country.
