The Vice-Chancellor, 水果派 of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Olufemi Peters, has implored the new students of the institution to strive to elevate Nigeria to its deserved place of greatness in Africa and the world.

鈥淚t is the only way in which you can make a positive mark as we all strive to elevate our country, Nigeria to its deserved place of greatness in Africa and the world.鈥

The vice-chancellor also urged them to utilise the opportunities offered by the flexibility and openness of their study in NOUN to excel more than their peers elsewhere.

According to Peters, 鈥淭he uniqueness of the university will evoke special interests in you; from people that are eager to know how you receive your lectures, when you receive them, to wanting to know the quality of your academic training in the university.

鈥淚 enjoin you, therefore, to be dedicated to your studies and be good ambassadors of this university,鈥 he said.

Professor Ganiyat Adesina-Uthman and director Kaduna Centre director, Mr.Abdullahi monitoring the conduct of examination

The former Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Ganiyat Adesina-Uthman has visited the centres of Kaduna and Special Study Centre for the Nigerian Air Force where she assessed the conduct of the e-examination.

Adesina-Uthman said she was at the two centres to monitor and assess the atmosphere at which the examination was being conducted.

Speaking further, she revealed that she was impressed with the conduct of the examination at the听 two centres and commended them for maintaining environmental neatness.

She added that the checking-in and out for the students was well in order and therefore highly commendable.

The former dean narrated that at the NAF Centre the staff have had to evacuate their offices and make it to examination venue so as make way for the students to take their examination.

“The single hall the centre was using is too small to accommodate the students, the batching would be too much,” said Adesina-Uthman.

She observed that the staff have to succumb and vacate their big office and set up systems for students to carry their exams.

She described the action of the management and staff of the centre as really commendable.

“This is the kind of efforts we want to put in,” she added.

Commenting on the Kaduna Study Centre, she said almost all the senior staff were in action right at on time.

Pointing out some of the challenges the two centre are facing, she stated that they both share a peculiar problem of lacking a big auditorium.

They also need more office space because at NAF Special Study Centre, the staff were hanging under the tree because they have sacrificed their office for the examination.

She promised to write as a major challenge in her report to the university management for speedy action.

She therefore appealed to the university management to look forward by providing a pedestrian bridge crossing the Kaduna – Zaria highway directly in front of the campus.

The former dean noted that she learned that three of the Kaduna Study Centre students were recently run over by vehicle, some were in the hospital recuperating while the other had given up and not able to write their exams.

“That lead to loosing of the university students,” she said.

She further promised to advise the university management to in a matter of urgency liaise with bodies like the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS), National Commission for Nomadic Education (NCNE), National Teachers Institute and other parastatals to jointly write to the Federal Government for the construction of a pedestrian bridge.

“This would surely benefit the staff, students and as well the surrounding communities around the campus and further reduce casualties,” said Adesina-Uthman.

VC giving his opening remarks

The Vice-Chancellor, 水果派 of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Olufemi Peters, has stated that the university remains firm in the听 implementation of policies that will prevent corruption and strengthen work ethics amongst the workforce and the students.

This, he said, will promote transparency and maintain the corporate integrity of the university.

The VC said this on Thursday, December 9, 2022, while giving his opening remarks at an enlightenment and education webinar organised by the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of the 水果派 of Nigeria.

The discourse was organised to mark the occasion of the 2022 International Anti-Corruption Day .

Virtual participant (s)

Themed “Uniting the World against Corruption,”
the event was held globally and as it was set aside by the United Nations Convention against Corruption, (UNCAC) to raise awareness on the need to fight and speak up against corruption.

According to Peters, action is required to counter the vices of corruption in the society.

“The importance of this day therefore must not be lost to us as we join the rest of the world to celebrate a cause that seeks to highlight the link between anti-corruption and development.

“We need to understand that tackling the menace is the right and responsibility of everyone, and that only through cooperation and involvement of each and every person, staff, students, and stakeholders can we overcome and curb the negative impact of corruption in our lives, institution and society at large.”

The guest speaker, Prof. Sam Smah

He said administrative support has been given by the university to relevant units in charge of ethical compliance, service delivery and quality assurance.

Peters commended ACTU for carrying out its mandate of promoting ethical principles and compliance in the university.

He enjoined staff and students to strengthen their efforts in ensuring that the corporate integrity of NOUN is maintained.

The guest speaker, Prof. Sam Smah, while delivering his lecture titled: “Developing Resilience in Promoting Anti-Corruption and Transparency among the Workforce”, stated that resilience was necessary to combat the scourge of corruption in the society.

Smah, a lecturer in the Department of Criminology and Security Studies, Faculty of Social Science, 水果派 of Nigeria (NOUN), said 鈥渞esilience is the force needed in the workforce to keep fighting and taking a stand against corruption especially when it is tough.”

Physical participant(s)

He noted that the private sector, non-governmental organisations, the media and citizens around the world are joining forces to fight this crime and NOUN ACTU is also part of the forces.

Earlier, Head, NOUN Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU), Mrs. Doris Nzenwa, in her welcome address, said the International Anti-Corruption Day is a date to remind everyone of the need to recognise the challenge and threat corruption possess to the stability and posterity of human existence across the globe.

She stated that: 鈥淭o us in NOUN it serves as a call for everybody, including staff, students and NOUN stakeholders to actively speak out and fight against corruption and a day to imbibe deeply the principles of ethical conduct in our everyday engagement.”

Nzenwa noted that the unit with the support from the university has continued to mark the annual celebration using various campaign messages to raise awareness amongst staff of their obligations and responsibilities to prevent fraud and corruption in all NOUN activities.

水果派-ACTU, she said, “intends to build-in the 2022 IACD theme ‘Uniting the World against corruption’ into its 2023 work plan.听 This will be one of its strategy towards achieving a corruption free NOUN environment”.

The Dean, Faculty of Law, Dr. Ernest Ugbejeh, has led staff of the faculty to present a book to a former dean of the faculty, Prof. Justus Sokefun.

The presentation of the book was in honour of Sokefun’s 60th birthday celebration.

The book, published by the Faculty of Law, was presented to the celebrant during a surprised birthday party jointly organised by the faculty and his family, which took place in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, on Saturday, October 29 2022.

The book, titled “Current Legal Issues and Development: Festschrift in Honour of Professor Justus Adedeji Sokefun,” is a 22 chapter book with over 500 pages.

According to Prof. Ugbejeh, 鈥渢he chapters provide legal education to all and sundry and provide legal reasoning on various topics in Law as they were selected out of many peer reviewed contributions due to their depth and the informative nature of their contents.

鈥淭he book is a publication of the Faculty of Law.”

Ugbejeh added that he returned the gesture of writing and presenting the book to Sokefun, as he had already set the example during his tenure as dean of the faculty in 2008.

鈥淭he idea of the book by the Faculty of Law, 水果派 of Nigeria (NOUN), aimed at bridging the gap between Law in Practice and Law as an academic course, was conceived by Professor Justus Adedeji Sokefun while he was dean in 2008.

鈥淭he rationale was to educate the mind of lawyers and non鈥搇awyers of current legal issues and development while at the same time honouring astute and accomplished scholars or jurists of note,鈥 the dean said.

Ugbejeh, who stated that he was particularly delighted to see the culture of continuity in an academic endeavour of this nature, aimed at promoting research and scholarship, noted that Sokefun, during his time as dean in 2008 and 2012, produced similar books in honour of accomplished scholars: Professor Olugbemiro Jegede) and Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe (both former Vice- Chancellors, NOUN) on his birthday.

Speaking to NOUN News correspondent, Dr. Ugbejeh explained that 鈥渢he chapters are contributions by lawyers in different vocations, including Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).”

Similarly, the NOUN Law graduates award was also presented to Sokefun during his birthday party.

A large birthday card, signed by all academic staff members of the faculty was equally presented to him.

While recommending the book to all as a must read because of its coverage and relevance, Ugbejeh extended his best wishes to the Faculty of Law and the editors who worked with him for a well produced book.

鈥淚 am proud to be associated with this productive project,鈥 he said.

The Dean, Faculty of Law, Dr. Ernest Ugbejeh, Dr. Folashade Aare and Mr. Nduka Njoku represented the faculty during the birthday celebration.

He thanked the Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, the NOUN management and the entire NOUN community for their continued support to the faculty.

The meeting听centred听on how to chat the university forward administratively听by听improving听the听students enrolment, staff development, amongst others.

Speaking on the challenges of low enrolment, the registrar stated that the dwindling nature of students鈥 enrolment,听both the prospective and current students,听calls for听a听serious concern.

鈥淔rom听the updates, the total number of enrolment听is听just听13,015听that had enrolled in the institution compared with the last semester matriculation,听which was over听20,000.听The number is not encouraging as the institution is losing her prospective students,鈥澨鼳jayi听lamented.

He听encouraged the centre directors to engage their staff members in regular staff meetings as some of the desk officers, especially the junior and new staff may not fully understand the importance of the ODL policy.

鈥淪tudents should be seen as clients, and need to be addressed properly and treated well as they serve as the institution’s ambassadors,鈥漷he registrar听said.

Ajayi听commended the efforts of the directors and senior officers for their great efforts on challenges encountered especially during examinations.

He, however,听frowned听at听the habit of exploitation听of听students,听saying that听some听member of听staff collide with business centres to exploit the students which may discourage听them听from further registration.

The registrar听said the directors should monitor their staff and discipline anyone that is being caught.

He reminisced on the issue of staff training,听saying听that “there is a need for training, the staff of the study centres have听complained that they are not benefiting from training.鈥

Ajayi further implored the directors to听make use of the听Annual Performance Assessment (APA)听form听in听analysing and giving recommendations on training听to听such staff, as it听will improve work performance.

The university,听he听added,听is working on certain issues and has been decided that faculty desk offers and the听deans听should be having meetings at least twice a year for their facilities.
